Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease that causes impaired ventilation and gas exchange, often leading to decreased oxygen saturation (SpO₂). This condition is exacerbated by airway obstruction, inflammation, and lung tissue damage. Non-pharmacological efforts such as
pursed lips breathing and semi-Fowler position can be used to help increase pulmonary ventilation, reduce shortness of breath, and improve oxygenation. The combination of pursed-lip breathing and the semi-Fowler's position has been shown to significantly increase oxygen saturation in pulmonary TB patients and can be recommended as a nursing intervention to improve respiratory function.
