PEMANFAATAN JAGUNG KEMASAN KALENG (Zea mays saccharata sturt) SEBAGAI MEDIA ALTERNATIF Nutrient Agar (NA) UNTUK PERTUMBUHAN Escherichia coli
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of canned sweet corn as a substitute for Nutrient Agar in supporting the growth of Escherichia coli. Methods: This experimental research was conducted in the Microbiology Laboratory of Medistra Health Institute, Lubuk Pakam, from May to June 2025. The study compared E. coli growth on conventional NA media and corn-based media. Both macroscopic and microscopic observations were performed, along with colony counts using a colony counter. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: The findings showed that Escherichia coli was able to grow on the corn-based media, forming colonies with morphology similar to those on Nutrient Agar. Macroscopic observations confirmed colony formation, while microscopic analysis verified bacterial identity. Although the growth rate was slightly different, the canned corn medium demonstrated adequate nutrient content—such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals to support microbial metabolism and proliferation.
